James in a hammock chair on Virgin Voyages Brilliant Lady

Virgin Voyages built three identical ships before they built Brilliant Lady. Same hull, essentially the same restaurants, same layout — Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady, and Resilient Lady are effectively the same vessel sailing different itineraries. This fourth ship breaks that pattern and needed some re-thinking to make it suitable for longer itineraries as well as colder climates. The changes run deeper than a new restaurant name or a fresh color palette. Lifeboats were repositioned to clear the Panama Canal. An entire wall was replaced with glass to open up glacier views. Window tinting was lightened for Alaska's muted light. These are engineering decisions, and they were made specifically for the West Coast and Alaska itineraries that we all love so much.

Engineered for the Panama Canal — and Everything That Changed Because of It

The sister ships can't transit the Panama Canal. The hull beam is the same 38 meters across all four ships, which fits well within the Neopanamax lock limit of 51.25 meters. The problem was the lifeboats — on the first three ships, the davits hang outboard, pushing the total width past the operational requirements for canal transit.

Brilliant Lady solved this with a custom davit system that repositions the lifeboats inward and closer to the hull. They tuck against the ship's side rather than overhanging. The change is invisible from the passenger perspective (except cruise ship nerds like myself), but it opened up the ability for Virgin's first ever Panama Canal crossing in March 2026.

The engineering tradeoff to make space for the lifeboats also forced a change in stateroom design. Pulling the lifeboats inboard on Deck 8 ate into the balcony space of about 154 adjacent cabins. Don't worry though - the designers at Virgin created a new category called "(Slightly) Smaller Balcony" Sea Terrace — same interior, but the balcony drops from 40 square feet to 9-11 square feet. In place of the standard chair-and-table setup, each gets two red hammock chairs facing each other with a small table between them.

For couples looking for a cheaper balcony option with a semi-obstructed view, it's actually a more intimate configuration than the standard balcony. These are also the only cabins besides the Massive Suite to feature dual hammock chairs.

The Deck 7 Overhang and The Dock's New Identity

On the sister ships, The Dock's outdoor seating area extends past the hull line and widens at the stern on Deck 7. That overhang was removed entirely on Brilliant Lady — another Panama Canal modification. The outdoor seating footprint is physically smaller, with lighter, more compact furniture replacing the heavier chairs from the original design.

Don't worry though, it's still one of the best spaces on the ship to relax with some light bites and cool drinks.

The updated Mediterranean-inspired menu here features trumpet royale mushrooms, monkfish with arugula pesto, beef kafta skewers, beet hummus, a mezze cart, and jeweled tabbouleh with pomegranate seeds. A new stage was added for live music and the lounges were softened for more social, conversation-friendly seating.

The Roundabout Redesign

The Roundabout on the sister ships has a specific aesthetic: iridescent partition walls, an oversized red table, a DJ booth, and the Voyage Vinyl record shop. All of it was removed on Brilliant Lady. The partitions are gone, the red table is out, the DJ booth was replaced with a large LED screen (for sports events and live performance backdrops), and the record shop was pulled (vinyl is still available in the Deck 6 shops).

What replaced it is a significantly more open space. The compass illuminated in blue and purple tones references Alaska's twilight. The Shore Things excursion desk — the big red counter on sister ships — was relocated to a smaller nook and reimagined as a living-room-style lounge. The effect is a central gathering space that feels less like a hotel lobby and more like somewhere you'd settle in with a coffee or a glass of wine and relax while sharing stories of that day's adventures and plans for tomorrow.

larger pool area

Larger Pools, Better Lounging

Pool size was the fleet's most consistent feedback point. Brilliant Lady addressed it: the main pool was elongated from 20 feet to 27 feet — a 35% increase. The Aquatic Club pool grew by 6.5 feet. Neither is a resort-scale pool, but the improvement is tangible, especially for multi-generational groups where the pool deck becomes the default meeting point.

The triangle benches around the pool area on the sister ships — a design choice that photographed well but wasn't particularly comfortable — were replaced with standard sun loungers. Many are now positioned in shaded areas, which reflects the shift from Caribbean sun-seeking to Alaska and Pacific Northwest weather where shade offers comfort rather than deprivation.

The Athletic Club Glass Wall — Built for Alaska

This is the single most consequential design change on the ship. The Athletic Club on Deck 16 occupies the full aft section — basketball court, boxing ring, adult seesaws, giant chess board, two hot tubs. On the sister ships, a solid wall closed off the stern, and the large semicircular daybed had a tall backrest that faced everyone inward toward the ship.

Brilliant Lady removed the wall and replaced it with floor-to-ceiling glass panels. The daybed backrest was pulled. All loungers were flipped to face the ocean. Walking gaps were added between loungers so you can step right up to the rail, and a new shade canopy covers the seating areas for cooler weather.

The result is a panoramic stern viewing platform at the highest public outdoor space on the ship. During Alaska sailings through Tracy Arm Fjord, past glaciers, and along the Inside Passage coastline, this is where you'll want to be. For couples, the twin hot tubs with glacier views are the kind of experience that doesn't exist on the Caribbean-optimized sister ships. For families with college-age kids, the basketball court and boxing ring are right there — everyone finds their version of the same space.

Windows, Doors, and the Alaska Climate Package

Three changes that sound technical but reshape the daily experience in cooler waters:

Lighter window glazing. Public spaces including Sip, Draught Haus, and the Roundabout had their window tinting lightened compared to the sister ships. The Caribbean-optimized darker glass on the first three ships would have filtered Alaska's already-muted light into dimness. The lighter glazing means seeing glaciers and wildlife from indoor spaces without losing the view — meaningful for anyone cruising the Inside Passage where whale sightings happen while you're holding a coffee.

Automatic sliding doors at stairwells. Open stairwells on cruise ships act as vertical wind tunnels, pulling cold air through multiple decks. Brilliant Lady added automatic doors at key stairwell access points, creating climate zones that keep interiors warm without limiting access. The kind of quiet infrastructure change that makes Alaska cruising comfortable for everyone — especially parents cruising with college-age kids who'll be moving between outdoor and indoor spaces constantly.

Warmer interior design. The interiors across multiple spaces were designed warmer and cozier than the Caribbean-forward aesthetic of the sister ships. Blankets are planned for outdoor seating areas during Alaska sailings. The "Four Corners" design theme — inspired by New York, Miami, Los Angeles, and Alaska — runs throughout the ship, with the Alaska influence showing in deeper jewel tones and more inviting textures.

Dining and Entertainment Additions

Rojo by Razzle Dazzle is Brilliant Lady's exclusive evening concept. Spanish-inspired tapas, pintxos, and platos grandes co-created by four-time James Beard nominee Justin Severino and chef Nate Hobart. Razzle Dazzle still operates for breakfast and brunch. The tapas format is ideal for couples who want to share and for groups where everyone has different appetites.

Grounds Club Too on Deck 15 in The Galley adds a second coffee bar to address the queue problem at the original Grounds Club. Coffee by morning, cocktails by evening.

Draught Haus expanded from a craft beer bar to a full all-day venue — barista coffees, cocktails on tap, wine, and an expanded juice counter. The partition walls to the Roundabout were removed, and a sweeping arc of dichroic glass fins serves as the new architectural centerpiece.

Juice Sea on Deck 7 was expanded with cold-pressed juices, a recovery-focused wellness shot program, dedicated protein smoothies with macronutrient transparency, and GLP-1-friendly high-protein options — a deliberate play for the West Coast wellness audience.

Seven new shows debuted with Brilliant Lady:

  • Up With A Twist — a Roaring '20s supper club dinner show in The Manor that works beautifully for date night or a multi-generational evening out
  • Murder in the Manor — immersive murder mystery where guests investigate a rock star's death (the kind of activity that bridges generations effortlessly)
  • Red Hot — musical revue spanning Virgin Records' five decades
  • Out of Time — time-travel comedy with acrobatics and music
  • Electric — UV dance party with neon face paint and a jellyfish parade
  • Disco Reimagined — 90-minute disco at Studio 72 with circus moments
  • Soulful Duets — duets across Motown, rock, and contemporary

The Radiance morning wellness ritual transforms the Aquatic Club into a guided five-phase sunrise experience — breathwork, stretching, and energizing movement through wireless headphones. Eight themed Vibe Rides (45-minute cycling sessions with dedicated playlists) are bookable via the app and included in the fare.

The West Coast and Alaska Itineraries

This is where all the engineering changes pay off. Brilliant Lady is the only ship in the Virgin fleet sailing the West Coast, and her deployment reads like a greatest-hits of itineraries the sister ships cannot access:

  • Los Angeles — California and Baja Mexico sailings, 5-8 nights
  • Seattle — Alaska roundtrips through September 2026 visiting Ketchikan, Sitka, Tracy Arm Fjord, and Prince Rupert, BC

The sister ships stay in their established rotations: Scarlet Lady in the Caribbean, Valiant Lady in the Mediterranean, Resilient Lady rotating between regions. If an Alaska cruise on Virgin Voyages is on your list — for a couples getaway, an anniversary trip, or a celebration with the family that your college-age kids will actually enjoy — Brilliant Lady is the only option, and it was specifically built for it.

Virgin Voyages Brings A Welcome Breath of Fresh Air To The West Coast

Virgin Voyages is adults-only (18+), which makes it one of the few cruise lines where parents can bring college-age kids without the ship catering to a younger children's demographic. There are no kids' clubs, no waterslides, no character breakfasts. The energy is adult, but the range is wide — the 20-year-old and the 60-year-old are using the same ship differently but finding the same quality.

Brilliant Lady's changes lean into this. The Athletic Club glass wall gives the active cruiser and the relaxed observer the same view. The Roundabout conversation clusters work for couples having a quiet evening and for a group of six catching up over drinks. The new entertainment — particularly Murder in the Manor and Up With A Twist — are designed to engage across age ranges in ways that a standard production show doesn't attempt.

For couples considering their first Virgin Voyages sailing, Brilliant Lady out of Seattle or LA is the strongest entry point in the fleet. For parents who want to take their 18+ kids on a cruise that doesn't feel like a family cruise, it's one of the very few options in the industry where everyone walks away feeling like the trip was designed for them.
