Seattle-based Holland America Line announced a $500 million fleet renovation program on April 15, calling it the largest guest-experience update in the company's 153-year history. The program, called Holland America Evolution, will reimagine six ships starting with Oosterdam in fall 2027.
The renovation spans Holland America Line's four Vista Class ships - Oosterdam, Zuiderdam, Westerdam, and Noordam - and the two Signature Class ships, Nieuw Amsterdam and Eurodam. Longtime shipbuilding partner Fincantieri, which built all 11 ships in the Holland America Line fleet at its Marghera shipyard in Italy, will carry out the work.
Oosterdam sets the template for the program and gives guests the first look at what's coming to the rest of the fleet. Confirmed additions to Oosterdam include:
- Thirty Solo Verandahs - purpose-built staterooms with a private balcony, dedicated workspace, and full Holland America Line amenities, created in response to growing solo traveler demand.
- Grand Dutch Café on Deck 3 - previously available only on Holland America Line's Pinnacle Class ships. Inspired by European café culture and rooted in the line's Dutch heritage, the café serves classics like Dutch pea soup, a welcome comfort on a chilly Alaska sailing day.
- Two Bridgeview Suites at 900 square feet each, with 180-degree panoramic views, wraparound balconies, and a forward position that emulates the view from the ship's bridge.
- A reimagined Pinnacle Suite at 1,550 square feet - the largest suite ever offered on a Vista Class ship.
- Twenty-four Vista Suites making their Vista Class debut, another feature previously exclusive to Pinnacle Class ships.

The Grand Dutch Café is the addition likely to generate the most guest buzz. On Pinnacle Class ships the café has become a signature gathering space - an informal, all-day spot for Dutch pastries, open-faced sandwiches, strong coffee, and the classic Dutch pea soup that tastes particularly good on a cool Inside Passage morning. Rooted in European café culture and the line's Dutch heritage, it anchors Deck 3 near the atrium and gives guests an unhurried alternative to the dining room or buffet. Extending it to Oosterdam - and eventually the other five Evolution ships - puts one of Holland America Line's most-loved venues within reach of a much wider audience.

Oosterdam will gain 76 staterooms in total while preserving the spacious design and intimate ship feel that Holland America Line guests consistently rank among the line's strengths. Holland America Line president Beth Bodensteiner said the program is a direct response to what guests love about the ships and what they want to see more of.
Sustainability in cruise ship design is a stated priority across the renovations, with Holland America Line focusing on circular design, material reuse during interior refreshes, and targeted technical investments in smarter power management and energy efficiency.

Holland America Line has been tied to Alaska longer than most of its competitors. The company moved its headquarters to Seattle in 1983 after merging with Alaska-focused operator Westours, and it has built its summer business around Inside Passage sailings ever since. Today Holland America Line remains one of the two dominant operators offering Alaska cruises from Seattle, alongside Princess Cruises - which, like Holland America Line, is a Carnival Corporation brand.
For West Coast cruisers, the announcement matters. Oosterdam currently sails Alaska itineraries from Seattle in summer, making it one of the most visible Holland America Line ships on the West Coast. Deployment schedules for the renovated ships in 2027 and 2028 have not yet been published, so cruisers interested in booking a refreshed Holland America Line ship should contact their travel advisor as new itineraries are released. Heather Hills at Flow Voyages can help you book an Alaska cruise on Holland America line this year or find the perfect West Coast cruise on board one of the newly updated Holland America Line fleet once Evolution drydock schedules are fully announced.
