A California coastal cruise and the days before or after it open up proposal ideas well beyond a table in the dining room of a specialty dining restaurant on your ship, from a picnic in a mission rose garden to a wine tasting in Sonoma or a romantic walk on the beach, these eight ideas cover Santa Barbara, Santa Ynez Valley wine country, Catalina Island, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and San Diego, with how each can play it's part in your engagement proposal.
Heather Hills at Flow Voyages can help you book a California coastal cruise and the hotel nights around it. A lot of the couples we talk with only think about proposing on the ship and while that's a great option for some folks - we think you should expand your horizon and consider ways to integrate the destination into your unique relationship. California coastal sailings are typically short and port-heavy, but often offer longer time in those ports since the stops are usually pretty close together. Every California coastal sailing also includes one foreign port, usually Ensenada, unless it is a repositioning cruise that ends in Vancouver so don't forget about that option when looking for engagement proposal ideas on a Pacific coastal cruise. Also, check out our Mexican Riviera proposal ideas cover a wine country proposal in Valle de Guadalupe outside Ensenada. For the cruise line packages, the onboard requests and how to plan around a no, start with our guide on how to plan a marriage proposal on a cruise. These ideas fit inside a typical six-to-nine-hour port call once you allow for the tender. The A.C. Postel Memorial Rose Garden sits across from Old Mission Santa Barbara, with more than 1,500 rose bushes on the lawn below the mission. The city keeps it open from 9 a.m. to sunset, so a picnic lunch fits a port day in Santa Barbara with a taxi ride up from the waterfront. Roses are sparse from January through March while the bushes are pruned, so they're at their best from spring through fall during the summer months. Santa Barbara's beaches work for a picnic or a romantic stroll along the water in any season, which is good since the prime months for the rose garden are actually banned by the City Of Santa Barbara who has officially excluded cruise ships between Memorial Day and Labor Day while also limiting the total number of visits to 20. If you can score one of these it just makes your Santa Barbara engagement proposal that much more special! Why we picked it: adults-only, with tips and most dining included. Promoted by FlowAds Santa Barbara also made our list of the most romantic West Coast cruise ports. Santa Ynez Valley wine tasting is a common shore excursion from Santa Barbara, about 30 miles away, with Buellton and the valley's other towns easy to reach on a port day, and Santa Barbara's Urban Wine Trail puts tasting rooms close to the waterfront. For a more personal and private proposal, the valley's estate wineries, such as Roblar with its patio, give you more privacy than the busier tasting rooms. Santa Barbara is a tender port, so check your all aboard time before you book. Ships anchor off Avalon on Catalina Island and tender guests to the pier in the center of town. From there, it is about a 10-minute walk along the curve of Avalon Bay to the round Casino building, with the harbor full of boats beside you, and the point by the Casino looking back at town is where we would propose. Tenders in Monterey land at the Coast Guard Pier, a walk along the waterfront from Cannery Row and the aquarium, and an early walk along the water before the crowds arrive is the simplest version. With a private driver, 17-Mile Drive along the coast of the Monterey Peninsula takes about two to three hours and stops at the coastal turnouts, including the Lone Cypress viewpoint. San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego give you a hotel night or a sail-away that a port call can't. Sonoma and Napa wine tours are common from San Francisco, roughly an hour or more each way from the cruise terminal at Pier 27, so they work as a ship tour or with a private driver, and a hotel night before or after the cruise gives you time to linger. A shuttle runs between Sonoma County and Pier 27 for cruise passengers, so a Sonoma stay can end at the gangway. For a whole cruise built around wine, Holland America has also built a California coastal cruise for wine lovers aboard Koningsdam. Every cruise into or out of San Francisco passes under the Golden Gate Bridge, and a late afternoon departure can mean sailing under it as the light turns gold. Fog can hide the bridge entirely, and departure times vary by sailing. Griffith Observatory overlooks the Los Angeles basin and the Hollywood Sign, and it stays open into the evening, making sunset a great time to go before a cruise from Los Angeles or Long Beach. The observatory building is closed on Mondays, so check the hours before you plan the evening. Sunset Cliffs in Point Loma, a short drive from the San Diego cruise terminal, is a stretch of sandstone bluffs facing west over the Pacific. Pick a spot well back from the crumbling edges. It pairs well with a stay at one of our cruise-friendly hotels in San Diego. San Diego's beaches are just as good for a picnic or a romantic stroll if you would rather propose on the sand. While there are a lot of great options on your cruise along California's coast, doing your proposal in Los Angeles, Long Beach or San Diego before embarkation makes for a unique option as well - especially if you have any doubts that your partner will respond with anything besides a resounding YES! ... Additionally, for folks on a limited budget - a 3, 4, or 5 day cruise visiting Catalina Island, Ensenada, and or San Diego with a pre-cruise engagement is a great way to save money so you can book a suite or splurge for the drink package. Proposing on the hotel night before you sail also means that if the answer is a no, you aren't stuck sharing a cabin for the rest of the cruise. If the rose garden is the plan, confirm your itinerary actually calls at Santa Barbara outside the January to March pruning season.
